September 2015 saw the revival of A Fleeting Animal: An Opera from Judevine, an important work by two of Vermont’s outstanding artists, composer Erik Nielsen and poet David Budbill. The opera was performed at six venues across Vermont, to enthusiastic audience response.
The opera is based on poems from Judevine, David Budbill’s book of poems about the fictional Northeast Kingdom town. It is truly a Vermont original. A Fleeting Animal revolves around the ill-fated love story of Tommy, a recently returned Vietnam veteran, and Grace, a struggling and misunderstood single mother.
The rich cast of supporting characters emerges from the muddy roads of rural Vermont life, the village of Judevine.
Now Susan Bettmann and White Rock Productions create the documentary film of the opera. The film includes performance footage and what goes on behind the scenes: about the people who bring the opera to life. Our aim is to make certain that this opera will endure, contributing to Vermont’s cultural legacy.
